The years 1934, 1935, and 1936 were heady times for rail fans!
During those years, Railway Age magazine published glowing, detailed descriptions of now-legendary "streamlined" locomotives such as the New York Central's Commodore Vanderbilt and the Pennsylvania's GG1 electrics and No. 3768 Pacific type (of Lionel model and 1937 Pennsy calendar fame) and new streamlined trains: Boston and Maine/Maine Central's Flying Yankee; Chicago, Burlington & Quincy's Zephyr, Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific's Hiawathas; Gulf, Mobile & Northern's Rebels; New York, New Haven and Hartford's Comet; and Union Pacific's M-10000 and M10001.
Of these steel rail giants, only the GG 1 became a "standard" finally reaching a total of 139 units. The rest were one-of-a-kind involving different railroads' different solutions to their particular passenger portage problems.
Familiar (and not-so-familiar) suppliers were involved in the manufacture of these unprecedented contributions to American rail history; American Car & Foundry, American Locomotive, Baldwin Locomotive, Budd, Electro- Motive , General Electric, Pullman, Westinghouse and-Goodyear Zeppelin Corporation!
Here are brief descriptions of the pioneers which preceded the Illinois Central's first venture into streamlining.
