There is scarcely another American railroad which can match the long life, robust growth, colorful employees, and civilizing influence of the Illinois Central.
The IC was founded by shrewd Yankee businessmen, supported by both Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas, and financed with large infusions of European capital. It was guided by directors with names such as Astor, Fish, Harriman, and Vanderbilt, and run by locomotive engineers such as the real Casey Jones.
The IC stretched from Lake Michigan to the Gulf of Mexico, hence the name of this book. Styling itself the Main Line of Mid-America, the IC had a good claim to the slogan because it ran through 14 Midwestern and Southern states.
From the Lakes to the Gulf captures all the excitement of nearly a century and a half of IC history in over 120,000 words of text, more than 150 stunning duotone photographs, and 32 pages of color photos.
Rounding out the book are mile-by-mile route descriptions of more than 120 operating districts, dozens of detailed maps (including one on each endpaper), steam and diesel locomotive rosters, and a chapter on the "new" IC of the 1990s.
Predecessor lines and merger partner Gulf, Mobile & Ohio are also extensively covered in this volume.
