THE REFRAINS OF STEVE GOODMAN'S SONG "City of New Orleans" bring to mind images of a long journey on a workaday railroad. In this book, author Jim Boyd relates his long journey with the Illinois Central from its centennial year of 1951 until its merger into the Illinois Central Gulf in 1972. He looks at the "Main Line of Mid-America" from the viewpoint of a kid with his favorite hometown railroad in the late steam era and follows its dieselized path from Wisconsin to the Gulf as school and work keep him within reach of its rails. Then comes the orange era of the 1960's and the author's experiences delivering new Electro-Motive diesels to the IC in Chicago and the Deep South and then going to work as a brakeman on the Iowa Division in northern Illinois. Throughout it all, his skills as a photographer capture the railroad in its various moods-viewed from the perspective of both an observer and an insider as the black and white of the steam era expands into the full color of the diesel era on one of America's most interesting and unpublicized major railroads. This is no corporate history or locomotive roster book, but rather a colorful look in words and pictures at a rapidly changing railroad at the peak of its glory. Come aboard for the journey, and you too will "be gone 500 miles when the day is done"-behind an orange-and-chocolate E-unit, with any luck at all!
