Partial Intro
Rare is the person who can see so clearly into the future as to predict with incredible accuracy the consequences of the decisions and actions of those who live in the present. The leaders of the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio and Illinois Central Railroads certainly had great hopes that their decision to combine their two corporations into one united system would create a prosperous and profitable enterprise. But who among them could have accurately foreseen the economic, political, and social changes that would radically challenge their "new" railroad and limit the Illinois Central Gulf's life to a short sixteen years. Who could have foreseen the transformation of the ICG into a core system shorn of both main lines and clusters of branch lines that were sold off to regional railroads; a new Illinois Central that would be soon grabbed by an ever-expanding Canadian National Railroad system?
