The Illinois Central was able to meet the travelling public's needs by virtue of the continual rebuilding and conversions performed at their Chicago Bumside Shops. While much of this heavyweight equipment was fairly standard, the GM\u0026amp;O also operated two nearly identical train sets constructed both in aluminum and steel and featuring full-width diaphragms between cars. An interesting facet to GM\u0026amp;O passenger cars is the fact that their streamlined (i.e., lightweight) coach and parlor cars featured three axle trucks, in the belief that six wheel trucks contributed to smoother riding qualities.
