On July 26, 1870, Burlington & Missouri River Railroad engine No. 1, the "Hurricane," steamed into the threeyear-old city of Lincoln, Nebraska, thereby officially completing the road to that point. Soon, this city on the prairie was to become the staging area for the great westward railroad expansion of the 1880's, as the Burlington built on to Denver and northeastern Wyoming, and filled southern Nebraska with a network of branch lines.
The Lincoln Division was established Oct. 16, 1904, at the time of the final assimilation of the predecessor B&MR lines into the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad system. Lincoln, already a hub of activity for the CB&Q, would grow in importance. By the late 1940's, a total of 2,400 were employed in or operating out of Lincoln. Twenty freights arrived and 21 left each day. Nineteen passenger trains operated in and out on a daily basis. The company's great Havelock shops built and repaired rolling stock for the entire CB&Q system.
Just prior to the Burlington Northern merger of 1970, the Lincoln Division had grown to encompass more than 1,900 miles of road, with Lincoln as a major center for diesel locomotive maintenance. Renamed the Nebraska Division in 1976, it continues to play a vital role for today's BN system.
The Hub of Burlington Lines West contains more than 500 photographs and maps illustrating the motive power, facilities and events that comprised the Lincoln Division. Included are 16 chapters of text that cover the construction, operations and human aspects of this portion of the Burlington Route.
