INTRODUCTION
The subject of drawing locomotives requires little in the way of introduction as it is probably true to say that most boys at some time or another get the craze, and whilst we have to admit the claims that the aeroplane is making on many, to a great number the locomotive reigns supreme, now and always. Although many boys do develop the craze for drawing locomotives, few get beyond the teething stage. There comes a time when the detail frightens them off, although this is quite unnecessary, as it is the purpose of this book to show. In my own case I was fortunate in that during my last two years at school I was under a master who took the class for mechanical and constructional drawing. He showed me on the blackboard how, by suitable approach, the freehand drawing of detail was easy-as it is-and it is as a tribute to his wonderful blackboard drawings that I have tried to follow his example.
Because this book is entitled " How to draw Locomotives " it does not mean that any hard and fast rules are laid down ; it merely shows what methods I have, after a fair amount of experience, found to be most satisfactory. Your object is to draw locomotives and to make them look right, and provided you do draw them and not trace them, I don't see that it really matters which method you adopt. If, therefore, you evolve what seem better ways to you, do not hesitate to use them. With this introduction I am showing a drawing by my son, Patrick, aged eight, which shows a small boy's first real efforts in locomotive drawing. To make progress from this stage rests with the individual. Although it is not in my own interests I will say that locomotives are easy to draw if you will practice a little-practice that will lead to many hours of absorbing pleasure. If this book shows the way, as I was shown on the blackboard years ago, I shall be content.
