The Devil surely took possession of me that fine post-Christmas afternoon in 1947. I cranked up the throttle on the transformer of my new Lionel train set, and my train took off at top speed. As the train went into that first curve, my new no. 2025 steam locomotive flew off that 27" diameter curve and rolled right into the nativity scene my father had set up under the Christmas tree. Moving like a flash, I peeled the cotton off the side rods and drivers to hide my evil deed and to get things back to normal before the master of the house came forth to see why it was suddenly quiet.
The Christmas I received my first Lionel train set was special. But that was only the beginning. The next Christmas season I spent many hours with my nose pressed against the window at Bamberger's department store in Newark, looking at the huge Lionel display and dreaming about adding all those magical trains and accessories to my setup. Soon my dreams began to come true.
Every year my trains were set up from Thanksgiving until New Year's. And every Christmas I received gifts for my layout. First the buildings of Plasticville, then the Lionel milk car, cattle car, and even that funny-looking coal car. Single main lines turned into double-tracked lines with trains highballing around the basement. I remember the sounds of that famous whistle, the smoke, and-oh yes-the smell.
Each year my wish list taken from those beautifully illustrated Lionel catalogs was evenly distributed among the relatives. Uncle Johnny always called (secretly of course) and asked me what I wanted for my trains. He just knew it was better to receive something you really wanted than socks or underwear. My father, on the other hand, always appeared with that right accessory every year as if he was a mind reader. (Gee, my kids say the same thing of me now!)
Special times during those childhood years were when we turned all the overhead lights off and the trains ran through the villages in the semidarkness with engines smoking, horns and whistles blaring, and lights piercing the darkness.
Those childhood years passed all too quickly, and over time my Lionel equipment was misplaced, given away, or sold-with the exception of my first locomotive. Through some miracle old no. 2025 is still with me.
As an adult, my interest in Lionel trains was rekindled. I reacquired the accessories I had as a boy and even enlarged my collection by visiting train shows and buying collections. Soon I plan to build my dream layout, which will be a variation of Lionel's famous 1949 New York display.
If you've just discovered Lionel trains, you have many pleasurable times ahead. Great new products keep flowing from Lionel Trains, Inc. The modern Lionel train enthusiast has so much to buy and use, it almost staggers the imagination. New diesel engines with finer details, big steam engines, complete sets, and a wide variety of cars and accessories are all available. All you have to do is go to your dealer and have a look. And don't forget to take your son or daughter along. Part of the enjoyment of toy trains is being together and sharing.
But just how do you begin? Well that's what this book is all about. I'm going to show you how to build a small Lionel 4' x 8' layout in step-by-step fashion. I also want to stir your imagination and get you dreaming about bigger and better layouts. So sit back, flip through the pages, and make a list of what you'll need to build that first layout-but most of all, dream. That's the key. Soon your dreams will become reality. And that's when the fun really starts.
