ON THE BACK COVER:
This is the story of an unique and mostly forgotten switching railroad which played a significant role in the development of the industries along the Hudson River in Hoboken, New Jersey. Its minuscule size, less than one mile from its northern to its southern terminus, did not deter the Hoboken Manufacturers Railroad from having an impact on the development of Hoboken and the New York Harbor, or from helping in its own small but important way to win both World Wars. The history of this tiny railroad is one of intrigue and mystery. During World War I the United States Federal Government acquired the railroad. After war's end the railroad did not return to private hands. The United States War Department oversaw its operation for many more years. The US War Department did its best to discourage rail fans and photographers from visiting the line. The motive power included everything from electric motors, interurban trolleys, and steam locomotives to first generation diesel-electric engines. Further deeping the mystery of this railroad is that the company records were lost during an enginehouse fire. Very few photographs and little information still exist. To date, this book contains the most extensive collection of Hoboken Shore Railroad photographs ever to be assembled in print.
