INTRODUCTION
In order to be satisfying, your railroad must suit your interest, skill level and available space. This book offers you six interesting layout plans in various shapes and sizes, geared toward the experienced model railroader who is willing to put a lot of time and creativity into producing a railroad that will provide years of absorbing operation. The layout plans are accompanied by instructions and diagrams on how to create the railroad you want. To those ends, we took advantage of modem modeling techniques and products which will make building easier, and your finished railroad better. On the other hand, we utilized the basic, time-tested methods and products where they remain the most effective way of achieving the desired results.
Good track, arranged for interesting operation, remains the key ingredient in the fun of this hobby. All of the plans take full advantage of the freedom provided by the use of Super-FlexTrack, easily cut to fit with the Atlas Modeler 's Super Saw (item #400), to provide such responsive arrangements.
Although the exterior of this book is standard paper-size, you'll notice that all of the track plans are in a "king-size" format which permits reproduction in an easy-to-follow, 2" to the foot scale. As in previous Atlas layout plan books, the scale of the accompanying train silhouettes matches each plan, giving you an accurate idea of the actual capacity of these railroads in accommodating your trains and traffic.
Some of the railroads in this book feature what has come to be known as "cookie-cutter" construction. In this form, a solid plywood table-top which supports the track is cut in such a way that it bends smoothly when fastened to a framework with supports at carefully calculated levels and locations. This provides the scenic and track location freedom usually associated with open-grid layout construction,
