The Steamship Historical Society of America, at its annual meeting held at the Peabody Museum of Salem on August 22, 1942, decided to issue as the second in its Reprint Series Charles H. Dow's pamphlet published in 1877 at the time of the completion of the steamer "Massachusetts". This pamphlet is of primary importance to students of the history of steam navigation on Long Island Sound because, in addition to quotations from early newspapers and other publications, it contains personal recollections gathered by the author from men who remembered the earliest steamboats on the Sound--a source of information long since closed to investigators.
