Remote and inaccessible in the mid 1800s, Western North Carolina's Southern Appalachia area held some of America's most beautiful scenery. It also contained much of the nation's most valuable resources. But the mountains stood in the way, both to exploitation of those resources and to prosperity for the people of the region. One industry changed all that. Railroading.
In this work, the most comprehensive of its kind, Cary Poole examines, in captivating narrative and wonderful photography, the development of railroading in the region. Painstaking research has produced histories for twenty-seven of Western North Carolina's most interesting and influential lines. The work examines the area's complete railroading industry-Class 1 railroads, shortlines, industrial and mining roads, and logging lines.
In each case, the author begins with the conception or chartering of the line, then draws the reader through the road's construction and operation, finishing either with the company's closing or its present disposition as a functioning railroad. Numerous anecdotes and personal stories from the region's natives and former railroad employees have been included to create a thoroughly enjoyable work.
Added to the textual histories are over three hundred photographs and illustrations, including timetables and maps for most of the lines discussed. The photographs (most of them never before published) come from private collections and various archives.
Lines included in the work are the Appalachian; Asheville & Craggy Mount; Asheville & Southern; Bee Tree Lumber Company; Black Mountain and the Yancey; Buffalo & Snowbird; Carolina & North-Western; Champion Fibre Company; Cliffside; Clinchfield; East Tennessee & Western North Carolina; Graham County; Kitchen Lumber Company; Laurel River & Hot Springs; Lawndale; Linville River; Madison County; Marietta & North Georgia; Mount Mitchell; Norwood Lumber Company; Southern; Tallulah Falls; three Tennessee & North Carolinas; Transylvania; and Tuckasegee & Southern railroads.
