INTRODUCTION
To me, the Forest of Dean was, for many years, a rather mysterious place, seen in the distance from the other side of the River Severn. It was not easy to get at from Dursley, where I was brought up, which increased the aura of mystery, and not until I was older, did the forest glades and walks become more familiar. It was not the Forest itself which compelled me to return so often, but it was a siding at Parkend Station, where the fledgling Dean Forest Preservation Society was based in the old goods shed. From this introduction developed an interest in all the Forest's railways, now all but gone, but once so plentiful. Harry Paar's two books on the lines were invaluable. Without them, I think the area around Bilson J unction would have remained a tangled web in my mind, impossible to unravel, but with the help of these books I gradually got to know all the lines, and the lovely rural area through which they ran.
I hope this book will also serve to unravel the complicated story of the Forest's railways by taking each line as a separate entity. I have also included the Midland line to Berkeley Road, which could not really be left out, although by no means is it in the Forest. Perhaps also, the areas potential for modelling will be realized. One can imagine a miniature Lydney Junction, if you have an empty aircraft hanger to spare!
Fortunately, although most of the lines are gone, there is still a ray of hope, for the DF RPS is well established at Norchard, and a visit to the site is an excellent introduction 1 the Forest of Dean's railways.
