INTRODUCTION
As the title implies this book lists the engine sheds of the Great Western Railway that did not enter British Railways' service in 1948. This includes sheds that were originally owned by amalgamated and absorbed companies plus their sheds that did not even reach GWR service.
Information regarding early depots is scarce, especially for the purpose of reproducing layouts and temporary sheds are listed where known but here again actual evidence is often lacking. The authors must confess that although every effort has been made to cover all depots they will not be surprised if one or two more carne to light as the result of this publication.
This book is a companion volume to Great Western Engine Sheds, 1947 (OPC 1974 edition), and the reader is referred to that publication for general growth of sheds, development, codings, including construction, facilities plus locomotive preparation and for historical information relating to depots that entered British Railways' service on 1st January, 1948.
