Centre County was a wilderness inhabited only by Muncy Indians when William Penn took possession of his colony in 1681. The Muncys were a tribe of the Delaware Indian Nation whose territory included much of New York and northern Pennsylvania. A Muncy chief, Bald Eagle, has given his name to much county geography. The chief lived near Bald Eagle Creek in what later became Miles-burg. His village was located on the south side of Bald Eagle Creek just north of the mouth of Spring Creek.
In 1720 war broke out between the Delawares and the Iroquois Nation. The cause of the conflict was the possession of vast tracts of hunting grounds in central Pennsylvania. The Iroquois were the victors and took over the conquered area. With this action, many Muncys moved west. Bald Eagle, however, remained in Centre County and was later killed in 1779 while traveling in the western part of Pennsylvania. The westward migration of the Delawares and Muncys did not end the Indian occupation of Centre County. As the Muncys moved west, the Shawnees traveled north from Georgia and Florida.
It was the Mingo tribe of the Shawnees who were finally driven to settle in Centre County. Spanish intrusion made them leave their native lands. When the Mingos decided to live in Centre County they formed an alliance with the victorious Iroquois. Logan was chief of the Mingos at the time, and he too was to give his name to much central Pennsylvania geography. Logan set up a camp near Mingoville in Centre County and visited it often, but his main village was in Mifflin County.
