DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
Just over a century and a half ago King George III gave his Royal Assent to the Bill which became the Act of Incorporation by which the first public railway line in Great Britain-and the world-came into being. From that time up to the nationalization of the railways in 1948 an unending succession of railway lines was proposed, planned, constructed, used and often subsequently closed. Some schemes were abandoned before they got beyond the planning stage, and the whole story of the birth of the railways of the British Isles is one of successes and bankruptcies, high hopes and desperate straits, of incorporations and abandonments and of a long drawn-out battle against public apathy and adversaries of all kinds.
The purpose of this large-scale work has been to set out in chronological order the individual railways of the British Isles, to record their incorporation and opening dates, and to trace, in the broadest and most comprehensive terms, their development and history. Years of patient research by the author among many hundreds of literary and factual sources and much enquiry and travel has resulted in a work which has no equal. Nowhere else can the railway enthusiast find readily accessible all the information contained in this volume, and it will be a boon to all concerned with railway matters. It is not intended for consecutive reading, but is a means of reference by which the pedigree, birth, development, and in some cases the death of a railway may be traced.
