During their golden age, railroads were the most important form of transport in the world. Not only did they carry passengers over short and long distances, they also carried freight of every conceivable type; moreover, they did it efficiently, quickly and inexpensively. Indeed, railroads were a mainstay of many economies and were responsible for the opening up of vast areas of the world to settlement.
Then popular opinion changed and railroads were considered relics of the past. The passenger train was outstripped by the automobile and airplanes offered an immense superiority in speed. With the exception of heavy freight, railroads could not match the efficient door-to-door road service provided by fast trucks.
Today, there is a realization that railroads are in fact competitive when it comes to intercity passenger service and shipping over longer distances. In light of concerns over global environmental damage, their relatively low consumption of energy is a major boon.
With more than 400 high-quality maps and photographs, The Historical Atlas of World Railroads brings the subject to life. It charts the spread of networks around the world, from the earliest tentative experiments to the creation of modern high-speed passenger networks that cross international borders and span continents.
This book examines railroad technology from the earliest "puffing billies" that struggled to keep pace with the horse, through the development of massively powerful and fast steam locomotives during the golden age of railroads, to the advent of efficient, high-speed, diesel-electric locomotives and electric tilting trains of today. It examines how railroads and their infrastructure are built and operated, and also explains the development of rail types, the construction of tunnels and bridges, advances in signaling technology, safety systems and freight handling techniques and equipment.
Most importantly, this book follows the fortunes of world railroads over the course of 200 years, from their birth and rapid expansion during the 19th century, through the glory days and subsequent contraction in the 20th century, to their revival in the 21st century, when once again they are set to become an indispensable form of transport.
