Ohio Railroad was granted on February 8, 1847. This railroad was to run from Columbus through Newark, to whatever point on the Ohio River the Directors might select. The Charter was drawn up and signed on July 1, 1847, and the work was started on portions of the road between Newark and Columbus in June, 1850. This was a hard time for building railroads. The economy was in a slump and money was short. After several times of being shut down, the railroad was finally completed and entered downtown Columbus at the new Union Station in 1853. This was the first railroad to enter Columbus. The Columbus and Lake Erie, later named the Sandusky Mansfield and Newark, was finished and entered Newark at St. Clair Street. However, it entered Newark on temporary railroad around 1848. The land south of Union Station was chosen and the terminal was named Fourth Street Yards.
