Here are pictured the things our forefathers used and in them is the essence of our history. The spinning wheel speaks eloquently of the need for clothing and the way the women met it. The hornbook tells of the colonists' love of learning and of their determination to secure it for their children. Here is the plow, a primitive tool, which made the difference between starvation and food, life and death. And the grain cradle speaking of the slow careful work that prepared the grain for the kitchen and the barns. Study the water wheel that ground the corn between its ponderous, rumbling stones, and contrast it with the great mills of todayso efficient, so swift, so hugegrinding the wheat that feeds the nations. The long road we have traveled since these things were used has been built by the strength and skill of men's hands.
This book is the basis for an understanding of our country's history. Children will enjoy it and through it they can handle, study and make the things their forefathers made and used.
