FOREWORD
This volume is a sort of commemorative venture marking the thirtieth anniversary of the author's departure for the frozen North. I was raised in Lynchburg and as a child was intrigued by a street car system which was, at that time, one of the most modern small-town systems in the United States.
The compilation has not been an easy task and has oceupied spare moments since 1963. Company records have long since vanished and photographs of the early days have been lost.
This volume has been assembled from the Lynchburg newspapers published between 1880 and 1941, and the memories of Mr. Busey Mawyer and the author.
The pictures have been assembled from a wide variety of sources. A few railfans visited Lynchburg in the last years to record the passing of the Master Unit cars. The resulting pictures have been reprinted and re-circulated over and over again to the point where the original ownership is sometimes difficult to ascertain. Credits have been given where possible to the original photographer and, in cases of duplicate prints where the photographer is uncertain, to the individual who provided the best print from which the printing negative was made.
I am particularly grateful to Jefferson Randolph Kean who provided most of the post card views and many of the photographs from his extensive collection of materials on the street railways of Virginia.
