Minden, Nebraska - October 1957: The open prairie is a place of 90 m.p.h. streamliners, their silver shrouds piercing the crispness of an autumn night as they race to another destination. The percussion of steel against steel thundering over the main street grade crossing echoes through each town, breaking the solitude of the night. Within seconds, the last of the stainless steel cars has passed, stillness once again settles in.
It's 2:10 a.m. Everyone is asleep. Everyone that is except for the night cop, the cook and waitress at an all-night cafe across the highway, and a bleary-eyed truck driver stopped for a cup of java. And oh yes, don't forget the clerk at the depot on his 8 p.m.-to-5 a.m.
Headphones on, the clerk hears the McCook dispatcher: "Minden-eastbound freight due in less than five minutes." The headphones are now laying on the desk, as with jacket and lantern, he's out onto the dark platform. Grade crossing lights and bell are soon activated, a warning that within seconds the nose of an F3 will come roaring around the curve west of the depot followed by 4,000 tons of steel and cargo. A run-by inspection is made by the clerk. As the caboose passes, a highball is given.
Far in the distance the drone of V-567s can be heard, maintaining the speed asked for by the dispatcher.
