DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION:
IDDEN TREASURES is the first comprehensive work on the Ohio River and Western Railway. The narrow-gauge road that evolved into the Ohio River and Western was incorporated in 1875 and made its last run in 1931. During that half-century, the OR&W, like so many narrow gauge railroads, saw a little bit of boom and a whole lot of bust.
Built in a burst of optimistic enthusiasm, the Ohio River and Western Railway struggled through most of its existence. In the end, the OR&W simply could not compete with its powerful, standard gauge counterparts: the Baltimore & Ohio and the Pennsylvania Railroads.
Edward H. Cass has blended the history of the OR&W and that of the people and places it served. Hidden Treasures balances personal anecdotes with business technicalities: vignettes of a couple that got married on an OR&W passenger train, or of the engineer who patiently followed a dog that would not get off the track, run alongside narratives on the hidden coal fields, the booms and busts, the corporate infighting, and the powerful personalities that make the history of the OR&W so compelling.
Hidden Treasures is much more than the straightforward history of a long defunct railroad. It is the story of how a time, a place, and a people had enormous influence on one another.
