In many ways, railroading has been the life blood of the Heartland. As late as the mid-sixties, the five states covered in this volume, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin, boasted nearly 45,000 route-miles of railroad within their boundaries. During the past three decades, abandonments and rationalization have reduced that figure, but railroading remains an integral element of the Heartland experience.
Heartland railroading is as exciting, vibrant and varied as the region itself. Thanks to the contributions of more than two dozen talented photographers, the pages of this book are filled with images that stir similar emotions and create a sensitive portrait that captures the essence and spirit of railroading in America's Heartland. Go easy through these pages. Feel the spray as NYC L-2c Mohawk 2850 storms through Stryker, scooping water on the fly, and stand back as a trio of black-and-gold Monon Alcos burn up the Hoosier Line at 55 m.p.h. Revel in the symphony of opposed-piston sound as an A-B-A of Milwaukee Clines top the grade at Lake with Chicago-bound tonnage and rejoice in the discovery of a live Alco HH660 switching at Troy in 1992; linger on the shop tracks at Englewood in the company of a simmering Hudson and eight-coupled switchers, and highball southbound on Ohio 65, pacing alongside DT&I bicentennial GP38-2 1776.
The images presented here are more than an exhibition of fine railroad photography, they are an intimate look at the heart and soul of Heartland railroading. Like that memorable evening at Mina, this volume is intended to inspire a sense of history and an appreciation for the past and present glories of "Heartland" railroading.
