No. 3 IN THE SERIES Western at Work

Introduction
For over 150 years railways and railwaymen have been developing their professional skills in the interests of offering an efficient service for the carriage of passengers and freight. Some of the early concepts of operation and safety still hold good, but much has changed over 150 years as the British railway system has remained in the forefront of rail transport progress throughout the world. One thing that has not changed over this long and honourable period is the fascination many people find in railways and their doings.
Recognising the interest in its system, the old Great Western Railway did much to publicise its activities and make information available about its routes, operations and the area it served. Even amid the high technology age of the High Speed Train the Western Region of British Railways, as successor to the GWR, has been careful not to let the task of running a modern railway swamp the best traditions of the past. Thus this series of booklets, entitled Western at Work, follows in the GWR tradition by making more information available about the railway system in Wales and the West, and about the technology and professionalism with which it is operated.
In addition to titles dealing with the Western Region as a whole (No. 1) and with its motive power and running and maintenance activities (No. 2), the initial Western at Work booklets include this present volume, devoted to a line of high interest and just a little controversy. The line is the one from Shrewsbury, through Knighton, Llandrindod Wells, and Llandovery, to the South Wales main line at Llanelli and then on into Swansea. Because traffic is relatively sparse and operational costs can only be reduced so far, the line has been under threat of closure in recent years. It has survived to continue to fulfil a vital role for the fairly isolated communities it serves by virtue of Government financial support and responsible rail operation.
Over the 110 miles from Shrewsbury to Llanelli the Central Wales line passes through the beautiful heartland of Wales. The winding, undulating route rises to three summits, passes through seven tunnels and crosses two major viaducts. Every mile presents something of interest or beauty.
This booklet sets out to describe the richness of the line's history from its piecemeal construction to its heyday of through services between Wales and the cities of the North West. The route is recorded in detail to increase the enjoyment of a journey on the line, and practical information is given about the many places of interest served. The final section deals with the line's operation and shows something of the behind the scenes activities involved in running a railway.
