At the front of each train is the headlight, at the rear the markers. Anything that can happen between headlights and markers takes place in one or another of these seventeen stories.
Headlights and Markers is a book to recapture in story form the romance of the rails; when the steam locomotive was king of the rails and the lonesome wail of the whistle sounding in the night sent a chill up the spine. Today railroads are now dieselized, yet this modernization process has only served to increase the true devotee's nostalgic interest in the days when smoke curling behind a speeding steam locomotive fired the imagination of every boy.
The stories selected for Headlights and Markers touch upon many phases of railroading. The background for some are completely fictional; others are related to actual railroads; at least one, the story of the capture, chase and recovery of the famous Civil War locomotive General, is entirely factual. In point of time, the stories range from the 1880's to a narrative about the hospital trains that moved men wounded in World War II - 85 colorful years of railroading. This book runs the gamut of the masters of the story, like Cy Warman, A. W. Somerville, Frank L. Packard, Frank H. Spearman and Harry Bedwell, to name a few.
While railroading is a business for many, a hobby for others, an absorbing passion for some - anyone will find reading enjoyment in these well told takes between Headlights and Markers.
