America seems no longer enchanted with the town railroad depot. The lure of the trains coming in and departing is no longer a high spot in the experiences of our young. Perhaps, some day, the airport, too, will have lost its magnetic compulsion.
In this book, however, are recalled the earlier days of railroading, when the chuffing engine on its steel ribbons was our sole messenger from far off places.
Harry Bedwell was a railroader from his youth, and he wrote of what he had done, and what he had seen done, and these tales remain today as the outstanding writings in a specialized and nostalgic field of Americana. His stories, especially in The Saturday Evening Post, brought him fame beyond the lot of his fellow workers, but he never lost touch with the element he loved.
The life of Harry Bedwell is so much "railroading" that the life of one becomes the history of the other.
