DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION:
In Hard Coal and Coal Cars Bob Karig tells the story of the coal hauling enterprise of the legendary New York, Ontario & Western Railway - the O & W. The story begins with an overview of the development of the anthracite mining industry in Pennsylvania and the early attempts to transport the coal to market. Increased demand for coal led to the development of nine, class one railroads that depended upon coal hauling for a significant portion of their revenue. Karig then describes how and why the O & W initially entered the anthracite market and how its business evolved and developed. This background sets the stage for the author's comprehensive discussion of the history of coal cars. The detailed presentation includes not only the history of the cars themselves but also the related technology and appliances. The reader learns that original coal cars in 16th century England were wooden carts carrying a few hundred pounds of material. By 1957, when it abandoned its coal hauling business, the O & W was employing all-steel hopper cars, capable of carrying tons of coal . The text contains a complete illustrated history of O & W coal cars. Karig offers an insightful economic analysis of how the vicissitudes of the coal industry, the advancement of technology, and the availability of cheaper heating fuels affected the railroad's development and caused its eventual demise. This intensively researched and well-documented book concludes with a comprehensive and helpful coal car identification section. This book is not just for those with an interest in the New York, Ontario & Western Railway, but for anyone interested in the important role the railroads played in the history of Pennsylvania's rich anthracite coal fields.
