The one word that can best characterize our progress as a nation is the word "movement:' We all have roots in the restlessness of those who first broke out of the eastern corridor and moved our country westward. This restlessness, this inborn inclination toward accomplishment by movement is, perhaps, best exemplified in the contemporary lives of those modern-day explorers, the men and women who drive the heavy rigs across the country.
This book shows, through vivid photography, the real life of long-distance truck drivers. Why do these unique people subject themselves to this exhausting, often boring, often lonely, always demanding existence, a livelihood that rarely allows for a normal family life? Many say that they are loners, others say it is because of the money. Some say that they like the constant danger. The one common answer among all truckers, however, is ...they love their work. They love the power of their trucks; to them, it's a power that translates into freedom and independence. Many truckers say that they are not whole people until they climb into the cab, turn that diesel over, hear the roar of the turbocharger and slap that shift lever into the first of as many as sixteen forward running gears. They say that their personalities change as they turn out onto the open road, above the traffic, getting those revs up, "checking seat-covers" and watching the old ladies in their big "4-wheelers" over on "Monfort Lane" while keeping an eye out for"Smokey..
Most of us know nothing about the life. For many, there exists a formidable mystique about truck drivers. This book will provide an insight into their worldthe different types of trucks they drive, the component parts of the rigs, the hazards they face on the road, the truck stops, the camaraderie, the self-discipline, what they think about those of us who don't drive trucks...
The drivers themselves provide the commentary as captions to the photographs, many of which are in color. HAMMER DOWN is a timely, overdue tribute to the truck driver and his world.
