INTRODUCTION
THE GWR was a truly remarkable railway; indeed it may justifiably be claimed that in the course of its 112 years of life it became more than simply a railway, developing into a proud institution with its own high standards and traditions. Unlike any of the other British railway companies, the GWR retained its original name through the Grouping of 1923 when it simply absorbed 16 minor railway companies, all but three in South Wales, and it was the only company to celebrate its centenary, in 1935. However, one of the best known characteristics of this much-loved railway was that from its birth to its lamented passing, at Nationalisation in 1948, the GWR succeeded in unique style always to be `different'.
From the very beginning, it stood apart from the other main lines of this country by being constructed to the 7ft '/,in so-called broad gauge, as a consequence of the vision and seemingly boundless imagination of its great Engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The 'baulk' road of the broad gauge track, its disc-and-crossbar signals and other unique features combined to create what Brunel not immodestly described as "the greatest work in England". Furthermore, this
flamboyant attitude was accompanied by the breath-taking concept r that the GWR should be merely the , first link in a chain of transport
linking London with New York: the t Great Western Railway was to be r extended across the vastness of the i Atlantic Ocean by means of the Great
Western Steamship Company!
