DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
To many enthusiasts, modellers in particular, interest in railways is not confined merely to locomotives, trains and the companies which ran them. The architecturand appearence of the lines and their stations engender a great fascination which is increased rather than dissipated by their disappearance. Each railway company had a distinctive style - both in its livery and in the methods of construction of its stations, ancillary buildings and facilities. The Great Western Railway, whose many lines became part of the Western Region of British Railways in 1948,  had a particularly distinctive approach to the layout and design of its buildings. Chris Leigh recorded something of this approach in a series of articles in Railway World and such was the readers' response that he has expanded and added to the articles to produce GWR Country Stations - a book which will prove an essential handbook to the railway modeller and a fascinating record of bygone days to railway enthusiasts. For many of the stations covered have now disappeared or are shadows of the past the Beeching cuts and general run down of branch lines and country stations have led to their disuse. GWR Country Stations brings them back to life with more than 170 illustrations - photographs and line drawings - and covers in detail some of the architecture and design style of the Western Region.
