This book on the Gunnison country completes the study and the five volumes of the narrow gauge collection. The expanded area of interest is from the Marshall Pass westward into Gunnison, the hub of railroad activity in each compass direction. Crested Butte and the Baldwin Mines, both heading north into the Elk Mountain Range, are vividly depicted with interesting photos. A southern excursion is taken into Lake City out of the Sapinero Junction as the D&RGW Line heads west toward the Black Canyon and Montrose. The Gorge, an almost impassable, deep canyon was called the Black Canyon (and it was appropriately titled) continues to Cimarron. The helper station at Cimarron is shown pictorially with many unpublished views and interesting information. Montrose City the trackage south up to Ouray, passing Ridgway, completes the D&RGW dialogue. But back to Gunnison, it is appropriately documented with fine new material to include the station facilities and town views. The LaVeta Hotel, a monument to brave thinking, is recorded and explained. Where else could one find so many locomotive types and such a variety of operations than in Gunnison. This book, with so many new photos, will help the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad fan complete the documentation of activities, historic and modern, of a fascinating transportation empire.
