This volume indexed, by subject and title, all of the articles published in Civil War Times, Illustrated and its predecessor, Civil War Times. Frustrated by the inconvenience of having to thumb through dozens of magazines to find a particular article or book review prompted this compilation, a project I naively believed could be completed in my spare time in a few weeks. I had subscribed to CWT and CWTI for 30 years, and compiling a personal index seemed a logical thing to attempt. Those original few weeks turned into eighteen months of compiling data, proofreading, and editing. Readers, however, have to actually peruse each article itself in order to find if a particular person, place or event is contained within the article. In order to make this new index more useful than the first, I decided to index the articles themselves. Thus, Guide to Civil War Periodicals, Volume I, 1991 includes listings for every person, place and event mentioned within each article. In response to numerous requests from users of the Index, I also included listings for each photograph and map.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:0.82em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eIncluded in the Guide to Civil War Periodicals are listings for all individual, battles, military units, significant events, maps and photographs. I also included listings for all illustrations of individuals. These chapters contain (1) a list of articles, by author; (2) a list of book reviews, by author; (3) a list of book reviews, by title; and (4) a numerical list of all articles by title, keyed to the listings in the subject index. The obvious choices for inclusion were the most popular magazines among general Civil War enthusiasts, which include America's Civil War, Blue \u0026amp; Gray, and Civil War: The Magazine of the Civil War Society. Military History magazine, which as its title suggests, covers a vast array of military topics, a significant portion of which are Civil War-related. Therefore it seemed prudent to include listings encompassing these articles as well. Two of my favorite sources for Civil War topics are The Gettysburg Magazine and Morningside Notes. The former is a newcomer to the Civil War community and a welcome addition to the literature on that great battle and compaing. Morningside Notes is an occasional publication which includes scholarly, footnoted articles on various military topics of the Civil War. Because its contents are always excellent and its distribution limited, I decided to include listings for it as well. In addition to these six magazines, I included listings for the two years of Civil War Times, Illustrated which were published since the printing of the Index, in essence a continuation of those listings contained in the first book. Edward and Eleanore Merideth, my parents, have stood by me for both of my books, and I have a sneaky suspicion that they look upon their son as many looked upon William T. Sherman, i.e. as crazy as a loon (although I doubt either of them know who Sherman was). My mother has assisted me with the proofreading and cross-checking of thousands of entries, always without a complaint and with her typical cheery smile. My father, however, is my number one unpaid and overworked employee.
