INTRODUCTION
Thirty years of spectator interest in Wisconsin's Green Bay and Western Railroad reached a focal point in the early 1970's when a proposed magazine article grew beyond that medium's capacity. An introduction to then-President H. Weldon McGee led to a proposal for a full-scale GB&W history, which was encouraged and aided immeasurably by Mr. McGee. The timing coincided with high adventure on the financial frontier, as GB&W moved steadily toward sale to its present owner, Itel Corporation of San Francisco, California.
This book is largely the product of visits to scores of GB&W employees, active and retired, who volunteered details of its long, misty history. It involved ranking officers, their relatives, craftsmen of operations and shops, and men long separated from GB&W daily affairs. Encouraged by good friends to complete this study, I am indebted to Ray Buhrmaster, Dan Luedke, Jim Scribbins and Tom Van Dreese for their encouragement and aid, all giving generously of their time in the project.
