introduction
A certain young railway enthusiast could usually rely on seeing up to two dozen Great Western engines daily in his home city of Salisbury, but the majority of locomotives on view there were Southern types and so it always came as a special treat to visit one of the really important GWR centres, even though the Second World War was raging all around. So picture our Boy, on a spring day in 1944, wending his way from North Road station through the war-ravaged Plymouth to the eastern outskirts of the city where was situated one of the finest institutions of the GWR-Laira locomotive depot, home of 'Kings' and 'Castles'. Unlike many such places, Laira was a friendly establishment and interested intruders were tolerated by the Shed Foreman who was even known to greet visitors with a cheerful 'Good morning' instead of bundling them off the premises. Then up and down the four roads of the 'New (straight) Shed' noting Laira's Nos.4087, 4703, 5009, 6002/4/17, 6872, 6911 and LMS 8414 with No.6318 from Truro and USA 2-8-0 No.1628 from somewhere 'up country'. Even though wartime conditions had severely lowered Western standards of locomotive maintenance, Laira shed staff made valiant attempts to keep their best engines reasonably clean and there were a few copper caps and brass nameplates glittering in the sunshine as the Boy clambered over the piles of ashes scattered around the pits and coal stage to see what engines had arrived for servicing. Local engines included Nos.3187, 3431/46, 3639, 4402 and 5350, but of greater interest were the strangers which had worked in from far-flung parts of the system, for during the War years the G W R operated its
