Introduction
Those of us who recall the sense of grievous loss in 1968 when steam was finally eliminated by BR and then the feeling of despair by the succeeding unbending policy of BR absolutely to refuse any steam traction over its system (a few runs by A3 No 4472 and the narrow gauge Vale of Rheidol excepted) are still grateful to Sir Peter Prior of H P Bulmer Ltd. Backed by the many people in the railway preservation movement, in 1971 Sir Peter eventually persuaded BR senior management to relent and allow a limited return to steam for specials on selected routes.
It was wholly appropriate that King George V, the flag-bearer of the Great Western locomotive fleet, should be chosen to pioneer the way back. The Great Western had been the only railway company in the country to retain its corporate identity from its Act of Incorporation in 1835 right through to the last day of 1947 when the government of the day compulsorily nationalised this great institution and the three other major railway companies to form one large state-controlled system. Today we are indeed fortunate that due to the efforts of enthusiastic GWR preservationists, going back to the purchase of No 9017 in 1962 (well before the end of steam on the Western Region) so many fine GWR engines  and branch lines have not only been preserved but are back in operation or reopened in many parts of England to give us a permanent insight to what the Great Western was really like.
