INTRODUCTION

The locomotive allocations given in this book are taken from the original Great Western Railway locomotive registers now kept in the Public Record Office at Kew. These registers record the allocation of each engine at 1st January 1921, together with subsequent allocations at the end of thirteen `four week' periods throughout the year.

Clearly the movement of locomotives between sheds occurred throughout each four week period, and the actual movement dates are, on occasions, shown in the register. For instance, loco No. 3813 is shown as moving to Westbury shed from Swindon Works on 14th February 1921, whilst the second four week period did not end until 27th February. The dates at the end of each period were: 30th January, 27th February, 27th March, 24th April, 22nd May, 19th June, 14th August, 11th September, 9th October, 6th November and 4th December, 1921, and 1st January 1922.
