The earlier photographs were taken in a climate of depression and high unemployment whilst the later views, as one of the captions relates, were photographed during a period of international tension and gathering war clouds, culminating in 1939 with the beginning of the Second World War. Through the lens of Mr. Soole's camera, we have a unique collection of photographs, taken largely within a twenty mile radius of the centre of Bristol, capturing the changing face of a single railway through a time span of some five years. Against the political, international and economic backcloth it is possible to see the character of the railway changing as it competes for freight traffic and passengers, not only from other railways but from the increasing volume of road transportation. The Great Western can be seen introducing new locomotives and carriages, modernising stations and improving routes and facilities, in an effort to stay competitive.
