Introduction
At first glance a work dealing with the Great Western Railway Company and its association with horses
might seem to describe two extremes. On the one hand, the railroad has always been considered to be a system of transportation primarily involving the steam locomotive, eventually eclipsed by the internal combustion engine and finally the modern electric locomotive. A horse, on the other hand, is always regarded as the four-legged animal which laboured on the highways of the United Kingdom in the days of the stage coach and turnpike roads, worked long hours tilling and ploughing the farms of our grandfathers, and was a means of recreation for the landed gentry both for fox hunting and on the racecourse.
It is odd that the many hundreds of writers on the subject of railway history have to a large extent ignored the major part the working horse has played in the development of the railways of Britain. It seems to have been completely forgotten that the very first railways were operated by willing horses in chain harness, dragging wagons and even passenger carriages along the early railways or plateways as they were originally called, long before the introduction of the steam engine. Even after adopting the steam engine for operating passenger and freight traffic, the GWR owned and cared for many thousands of horses which were used for collecting and delivering merchandise in addition to more specialised tasks such as shunting and hauling the company fire engine and other less dramatic vehicles.
