The Great Western Railway was at the forefront of many events and developments in British railway history. Whether it be the majestic engineering works of Isambard Kingdom Brunel; the locomotives of Daniel" Gooch, William Dean, G. J. Churchward, Collett and Hawksworth; the legendary named trains such as the `Cheltenham
Flyer' and the `Cornish Riviera Express'; or the quality and finesse of Great Western rolling stock and stations, the Company was a unique institution which exuded a certain `style' which no other railway company matched to the same degree. Revered by generations of rail enthusiasts and the general public, interest and appreciation of the Company continues unabated and is aided by the significant number of
preserved steam railways and preservation centres which either operate over former Great Western metals or utilise ex GWR engines and rolling stock.
This unique work commemorates the 150th Anniversary of the incorporation of the Great Western Railway in August 1835, and is an illustrated tribute by the highly respected Guild of Railway Artists to the personnel, works and achievements of the Company. The 60 paintings and drawings by members of the Guild portray the many facets of railway operation associated with the Great Western with subjects ranging from horse shunting and porters to locomotive portraits and station scenes. The illustrations are accompanied by full descriptions and the work is prefaced by a concise introduction to the activities of the Company by railway author, Brian Hollingsworth.
