Partial Introduction
The mountainous nature and low population of much of rural Wales hardly encouraged railway development but, despite these drawbacks and lack of potential, most places of any importance eventually benefited from a railway service. Most of the routes that were constructed traversed some outstandingly beautiful areas of Wales, and are generally considered to have been among the most attractive railway lines ever built in Great Britain.
In this album I have attempted to convey something of the atmosphere of these lines as they were during their last years of steam operation, almost totally untouched by modernisation. The draconian cutbacks in the railway system in the 1960s saw many of the routes featured in this album swept away in an orgy of destruction that robbed many tiny communities of their links with the outside world. The network of rural lines in Wales, as in most areas, developed as a result of the desire of local citizens to see their own town connected to the railway system which was rapidly expanding in the middle years of the nineteenth century. A rail connection ensured that both passengers and freight would be transported much more speedily than had hitherto been possible in the age of the traditional horse and cart.
