In this album I have sought to convey something of the atmosphere of GWR branch and secondary lines in the south west of England which, for the purposes of this book, is defined as stretching from Gloucestershire to Cornwall. Many of these routes were conceived by local people who merely desired to see the town in which they lived connected to the expanding railway system, thus enabling passengers and goods to be moved much more speedily and efficiently than hitherto. Needless to say in the vast majority of cases they struggled to raise the necessary finance and frequently one of the established companies, such as the Bristol \u0026amp; Exeter Railway, which had the necessary financial muscle and engineering expertise, would have to rescue them.
