Partial Introduction
The Great Western Railway (GWR) was known to its many devotees as 'God's Wonderful Railway' while its detractors often referred to it disparagingly as the 'Great Way Round'. Love it or loathe it, there was no doubt that the GWR played a key role in the history of Britain's railway system and made a huge impact on the industrial and social development of the nation.
This book is not concerned with these weighty matters however, but focuses on a comparatively small area of the GWR's operations. In this album I have sought to convey something of the atmosphere of GWR branch and secondary lines in the south west of England which, for the purposes of this book, is defined as stretching from Gloucestershire to Cornwall. Many of these routes were conceived by local people who merely desired to see the town in which they lived connected to the expanding railway system, thus enabling passengers and goods to be moved much more speedily and efficiently than hitherto. Needless to say in the vast majority of cases they struggled to raise the necessary finance and frequently one of the established companies, such as the Bristol & Exeter Railway, which had the necessary financial muscle and engineering expertise, would have to rescue them.
