ON THE TRAIN-SHEET This book is based on a statement by James J. Hill, who built the Great Northern Railway: "Most men who have really lived have had, in some shape, their great adventure. The railway is mine." I, too, regard the railway as a "great adventure." My father gave 43 years of his life to the Pennsylvania Railroad and as a youth I traveled many thousands of miles on his passes. After growing up, I worked briefly for that road myself and still later latched onto the job I now hold, editor of Railroad Magazine. My earliest recollection is that of a small boy riding a Pennsy train of wooden coaches pulled by a coal-smoking engine from Philadelphia to the white sandy beach of Ocean Grove, New Jersey. I sat on a red plush seat, with a warm wind blowing tiny cinders from the locomotive stack through an open window onto my white knee-length pants, and I was filled with ecstasy.
Now, however, passenger trains are slowly fading from the American scene. In 15 years or so most of them may be gone forever. I am writing this book as a tribute to some of the Great Trains of All Time. Note the word "some." No book covers its subject completely. There is always more to be said. The best I could do in this case was pick out a few trains. There are many, many others, both in the United States and abroad. For example, I have not touched on South America, Mexico, Sweden, Italy, Germany, India, China, Japan, and so on.
My material was gathered in years of personal travel, from talks with railroad men, from old scrapbooks and newspapers, from history books, from railroad publicity directors, and from the files of Railroad Magazine dating back to 1906. I thank all who helped in this project, including Popular Publications, Inc., which permitted me to adapt certain Railroad Magazine articles of mine for use in this book. For many fruitful years Herb Mott has been an illustrator for Railroad Magazine. Few artists know as much about trains as he does.
