PREFACE
When the Blandford Press asked me to choose sixty-four steam locomotives from the railways of the world to form a 'gallery of fame', of all the 150 years from the opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway to the present time, the question arose as to what constituted a 'famous', or a 'great', locomotive. There are certainly quite a lot from which to choose! Furthermore, this new book as planned was not to be purely a collection of pictures with simple explanatory captions. It was to present a connected theme, revealing something of the interplay of design practice, and the sharing of experience by engineers in many different parts of the world. So within the parameter of 'sixty-four' we had to bring in many overseas railways, and inevitably examples from some of the best-known countries such as Great Britain, France, and the U.S.A. had to be strictly rationed. Again fame and greatness are not necessarily the same thing. A very famous engine like, for example, the City of Truro, did not in retrospect contribute a great deal towards the world development of locomotive practice, while others perhaps not so well known unquestionably rank among the 'great'.
So the title was chosen with some deliberation. At the same time it must be emphasised that the selected 'sixty-four' were of my own personal choice. Those who have studied locomotive history may not agree that some of these choices were justified. In a field of such intense and ever-growing interest, partisan feelings often run high, and not only among British enthusiasts. But I have endeavoured to spread the interest as widely and impartially as I can. In one respect, however, I venture to think that all readers will be agreed, and that is upon the superb quality of the portraits of the locomotives that have been painted by my friends Clifford and Wendy Meadway.
