Long before it was discovered by Jim Bridger rumors of it had acquired fantastic proportions. And long after the lake had been completely explored some of these weird tales were still perpetuated. A powerful lake tribe was said to inhabit the lake islands; large whirlpools, marking the opening of subterranean channels that drained the lake into the Pacific Ocean, and kept it at a constant level, were believed to be located in its midst. As late as 1870 \"eye witnesses\" reported such a whirlpool between Antelope and Fremont Islands and stated that \"a schooner was almost drawn into it.\" Fears were expressed for the safety of steamers then cruising the lake.
