There has always been a great deal of curiosity and an air of mystery about Great Salt Lake. Long before it was discovered by Jim Bridger rumors of it had acquired fantastic proportions. And long after the lake had been completely explored some of these weird tales were still perpetuated. A powerful lake tribe was said to inhabit the lake islands; large whirlpools, marking the opening of subterranean channels that drained the lake into the Pacific Ocean, and kept it at a constant level, were believed to be located in its midst. As late as 1870 "eye witnesses" reported such a whirlpool between Antelope and Fremont Islands and stated that "a schooner was almost drawn into it." Fears were expressed for the safety of steamers then cruising the lake. Today there are only a few inches of water where this incident was said to have occurred.
Every lake must have its monster, and Great Salt Lake is no exception. Rumors of the monster helped shroud the lake in mystery. In 1877 a group of workmen camped at the north end of it reported that the monster came bellowing out of the lake and invaded their camp, causing them to flee to the hills. Next morning huge overturned boulders showed clearly the trail left by the beast.
