Notes on the Plates ? 133
Railways came to Europe in the 1830s and 40s, presenting nineteenth-century technology with its greatest challenge and its greatest triumph. Within a decade they had transformed time and space, reducing days to hours and bringing distant cities close together. The stations became symbols of that triumph, designed both to impress the traveller and to proclaim the glory not only of the railway company but of the nation itself. Many of these enormous structures survive intact, monuments to the skill and vision of those who built them.
