Introduction
Leander was one of a total of 191 Class 5XP's (or `Jubilees') and as such formed the most numerous type of express
passenger engines built during 25 years of the LMS. They were built to strengthen the second division of LMS express
locomotives, which in the 1930s were mainly in the hands of various pre-
grouping 4-4-0 Compounds and ageing 4-6-0s.
Construction of the class was shared by Crewe and Derby Works and also the North British Locomotive Co Ltd (NBL). Building details are:

Although the first member of the class was numbered 5552 this locomotive exchanged identities with No 5642 in April 1935; and for the rest of its life 5642 was in fact the original 5552! The new number 5552 was named Silver Jubilee and from this the class took its name. 5552 received chromium plated boiler bands
