By mid-1943, on another continent, the fortunes of war were beginning to shift, offering glimmers of hope to the Allied Forces locked in combat with the Axis Powers. At home, in the boardrooms of some of America's railroads in the midst of a war not yet won, attention was turning to the day when the country would return to a peacetime footing. With revenues peaking at levels not seen in more than a decade, executives still realized the good times would not last forever and they had to be prepared for it. In St. Paul, planners at the Great Northern and Northern Pacific railways began laying plans for their respective modem postwar passenger fleets, plans that included streamlined passenger cars so comfortable and attractive that they were certain to maintain the public's favor.
