The Great Northern Railway developed from the St. Paul, Minneapolis, and Manitoba Railway. The Manitoba had been organized by James J. Hill and others in 1879 from a bankrupt Minnesota railroad, the St. Paul and Pacific. It developed slowly over a ten year period, building branch lines into fertile grain producing regions such as the Red River Valley. Financed conservatively, the railroad spread slowly across North Dakota.
